Q&As with Cody Hild
Cody, you’ve been employed at AHT since July 2010 and have held a few different roles. Tell us about your journey here.
I started out in the Induction department and worked my way up to technician. I was a third shift supervisor for Burton for a while which gave me experience on the furnace side of Burton. I work now as a lab technician for Burton.
Have your previous positions helped you to be more successful as a lab technician today?
Absolutely, having experience working within the individual department (induction, furnace, etc.) gives you a better understanding of what you are checking for lab requirements.
What does a typical day look like for you as Lab Technician?
I come in and get a rundown of what is hot to ship or if there were any issues with parts, and make sure that the furnace and induction departments get work orders released in a timely manner. Other activities include: cutting samples to make sure they are stocked up for furnace loads and working on any side projects for my supervisor.
I try my best to answer any questions for my coworkers as well, or lead them to the right person to get an issue solved.
We hear you are quite the musician. Tell us about that.
I have played in different punk rock and ska bands in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area and got to do some traveling around Iowa & Illinois with that. I played guitar and bass in different bands, but my main instrument is piano. I've played that since I was 10 years old. I still play piano now, but more so just at home for my wife and cats.
When you’re not at work, how do you like to spend your free time?
When I'm not at work, I like hanging out with my wife, Megan, and four cats (Lucky, Elsa, Squirt & Freddie). I also enjoy reading comic books and writing music for small ensemble groups. I compose instrumental music with my piano at home for string quartets, percussion groups, woodwind trios, etc.
Being at AHT since 2010, you’ve probably seen a lot of change/growth over the years. Can you tell us about a few things that stick out to you?
Seeing all the new upgrades from an equipment standpoint has always been exciting to see happen. The addition of robotic arms in the induction department and learning how to operate them was an interesting experience to have.
What is one thing people may not know about Advanced Heat Treat Corp.?
We now can take micrograph images at the Burton lab. This allows us to look at the microstructure of the part to ensure it is in spec per the customer's needs.
