Jill, you’ve been with the company since 2007. How did you end up at AHT initially and what keeps you here?
Before AHT, I was in public accounting for 8 years and actually worked on AHT’s taxes and financials during that time. When AHT had an opening for an accounting position, I applied. My husband and I were starting a family and I wanted to get away from the long hours during tax season.
I continue to stay at AHT because of the great people, flexibility and I enjoy the variety of my job. I work on projects like cost analysis, reviewing 401(K) administration, managing cash flow, asset management, and more.
In February of 2023, you were promoted from Accountant to Corporate Controller, overseeing finance initiatives at all four AHT locations. Congratulations! Tell us about some of the things you’ve worked on in your new position.
I spend my time compiling and analyzing data so AHT can make informed business decisions. Some examples are evaluating the cost of new equipment and related costs, analyzing costs for potential savings, etc. I also oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, purchasing, 401(K) administration and payroll processing, and ensuring that AHT’s accounting procedures fall in line with regulations.
As Corporate Controller at AHT, what does a typical day look like for you?
I don’t think there is a typical day. Every day is different. I also have a lot of projects that are done just one time a year such as year-end financials, tax reporting, creating annual budgets and more.
We know family is very important to you and to the company as a whole. Tell us about your family.
My husband is Shane and we have two kids, Ella (17) and Max (14). Shane works at AHT also, as a senior heat treat technician, and the last two summers, my daughter Ella has also worked at AHT, providing office support.
Jill, you are a member of AHT’s Volunteer Committee. What are some ways you’ve personally volunteered or contributed to the community?
My volunteer activities center around my kids and their activities. We have volunteered several times at the local food bank, providing a valuable opportunity for my children to understand the importance of community service and recognize that not everyone has the same advantages/resources in life.
You are also a member of the Iowa Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. Can you tell us a little about that?
These professional organizations furnish me with daily email updates concerning developments within the accounting and finance sectors. The updates encompass a wide array of topics, including modifications in tax legislation and significant economic trends. These organizations also sponsor continuing education to maintain my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. (Forty hours of continuing education must be completed each year to hold the CPA license.)
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?
I enjoy spending time with my family and being outside. We spend time walking our dogs, boating and watching my son’s sporting events (ex: football, basketball, baseball). I also enjoy playing games and cards with friends and family. We like the card game called Golf and the domino game, Mexican Train.
AHT has employee events throughout the year – some are for training / educational purposes and others encourage team building / friendly competition. What employee events stand out to you the most and why?
My favorite event is the annual tailgate in the fall. All employees are able to put their work aside for a few hours. The employees enjoy grilled food, socialize and play cornhole together. I enjoy friendly competitions. I have placed in the top 3 several times.
What are some employment benefits at AHT that are impressive or that people might not know about?
AHT is very family-friendly. I am able to adjust my work schedule to attend my kids’ school events and sporting events. AHT also has a generous PTO policy that allows me to take time off to spend with my family.
Given my role in accounting, I am also a big fan of the 401(K) plan and the match provided by the company. This is a great benefit that helps employees save for retirement.
