Q&As with Kyle Miller
Kyle, you joined the team in May 2023. How did you learn about the job at Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) and what enticed you to apply?
Jared Salisbury, a current AHT employee, told me that AHT was hiring at the time. I love to learn how to do new things and experience new environments, so I applied. I originally applied for Production Support, but with my computer and customer service experience, Shipping and Receiving was a great fit.
What does a typical day look like for you as shipping & receiving coordinator?
A typical day for me would be receiving deliveries from carriers like Fedex, UPS, LTL freight, etc.; verifying incoming parts/products against purchase orders/packing lists; inspecting items for damage or differences in quantity; and entering parts into the system to begin the process of new product orders. Also, throughout the day, I load up those same carriers with finished products to go back to our customers.
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time, I like to play video games. If I'm not doing that, I usually watch sports or spend time with my family.
What is one thing people may not know about Kyle Miller?
I have a bad habit of collecting shoes, mainly Air Jordans. Started collecting around 2020 and have not stopped yet…
What advice would you give our customers ?
My best advice is to include proper paperwork, including purchase orders and prints. It definitely allows us to turn the parts around faster, so there is no delay in processing them into the system.
Also, have proper packaging, so parts do not get damaged.
AHT is very focused on continuous improvement and the concept of "Two Second Lean" (2SL). How would you describe 2SL to someone who’s never heard of it?
Two second lean is a way to approach your work by fixing small problems that waste time or effort. It’s all about making tiny, fast changes every day that can help you save time, reduce frustration and help you make your work more enjoyable on a daily basis. It can be a simple as labeling a container so you know what it contains.
The weather is starting to get nicer. What things do you look forward to in the warmer months?
I'm looking forward to having cookouts at home and even at work. Also, it'll be nice not having to bundle up for cold weather anymore.
In May, we have several customers visiting us from all over the US. What are some recommendations you’d give to someone who is visiting Waterloo / Cedar Falls, Iowa? (restaurants, activities, etc.)
Main Street in Cedar Falls honestly has everything - great restaurants, cafes and shops. It’s also a great way to support locally-owned businesses.
