Q&As with Michael Fritts
Michael, you joined the AHT team in September. Tell us about your training so far and how that has helped prepare you to better assist our customers with their heat treat needs.
Transitioning from a career in advertising, I knew I was going to have a lot to learn. The leadership team put together a detailed, 90-day plan that would provide me with exposure to almost every aspect of our business. I expected a steep learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed every minute. Part of the training included several opportunities to connect with clients, hearing first-hand what their needs and expectations are.
What enticed you to apply at Advanced Heat Treat Corp.?
I was drawn to AHT’s reputation, both within the Cedar Valley (as an employer) and within the industry as a recognized leader. That combination is unique, and it was something I wanted to be a part of.
What are some things you’ve found interesting during your onboarding?
Organizationally, I’m amazed at how many people have spent their entire careers here. Lots of companies tout their culture, but until you see it in real-time, it’s hard to explain the effect it has on a workplace. That experience has organically created industry expertise that differentiates us from our competitors.
Each member of the AHT sales team has specific territories/customers they are responsible for. Which ones are assigned to you?
I’ll be focused on the northeast region of the United States as it pertains to aerospace, space and defense industries. I’ll also be focused nationally on the hydraulic cylinder bar opportunities. I have spent a good amount of my career traveling to the northeast, and that familiarity will be a plus.
Prior to AHT, what was your professional background and how do you think that will come into play?
I spent nearly 17 years working in marketing/advertising. More than 9 years were focused on the national automotive industry, and the rest were spread across national and regional retail, restaurant, fitness, multi-location/franchise, healthcare, insurance, finance and education industries. Those experiences are all unique, but they are always centered on providing exceptional service, solving challenges and building long-term relationships with customers.
When you’re not working at AHT, how do you like to spend your free time?
My wife, Cassidy, and I have 3 daughters (Kennedy 18, Sophia 14, Renee 13). Most of our free time is spent at soccer games, dance competitions, basketball games and track meets. We like to travel to places we can enjoy the outdoors. I also like to cook and garden, sneaking in a few rounds of golf when I can.
What is one thing people may not know about Michael Fritts?
I’m a lifelong Michigan Wolverines fan. I can’t really say for sure how that happened to someone from Iowa, but football and basketball have been on a pretty good run the last few years.
What is one thing people may not know about AHT?
I think there are a few ways to look at this. Locally (Cedar Valley), I think people would be amazed by some of the companies/brands we work with here in Waterloo, Iowa.
Within the industry overall, I think our combination of producing exceptional results with quick turnaround times is a significant differentiator.
In February, AHT will celebrate “Employee Appreciation” throughout the month – planning team activities, handing out gifts, providing lunch, etc. What are some things you’ve appreciated about working with your new AHT teammates?
I noted culture previously, but there are constant examples of people willing to assist with a task and dedicate time to teach or train with patience. There’s an understanding that the service we provide at AHT is unique, so nothing gets rushed or dismissed.
